Our homes are our castles. They are where we return to after a long day at work, and they are where we relax with family and friends. But our homes are also where we keep most of our valuables, and criminals know this. How do we ensure our homes are protected from thieves who want to take what isn’t theirs? Here are five basic things everyone can do to keep your house safe and secure.
- Always lock your doors.
Your home’s first line of defense is a locked door. Criminals aren’t known for their work ethic so make it harder for them to gain access to your residence. In most cases a burglar will quickly move on if your door is locked.
- Get a house alarm.
Another very effective way to protect your home is with a home alarm. Much like a locked door, burglars tend to avoid houses with alarms since they are usually monitored around the clock— and most include home security cameras.
- Organize a neighborhood watch.
The more eyes keeping watch over a neighborhood, the less likely criminals are to ply their trade. Plus, it’s a great way to get to know your neighbors and form new friendships. And with a personal connection with your neighbors, you and they are more likely to keep a close eye on suspicious activities.
- Leave lights on when you are away.
Like locked doors and alarms, lights are a great deterrent for thieves. Lights on and a TV or a radio on gives the appearance of someone being in the house, and any doubt you can give a would-be thief increases the odds they’ll move on to an easier, quieter target.
- Have a professional give an assessment of your home security.
While you try to do all you can to keep your home safe, it’s always a good idea to have a third party inspect your home and offer advice. Some police departments will perform a home visit for free. Check with your local police department to see if they offer this service.
Few crimes leave us feeling more violated than having our home broken into by criminals. But with a few easy-to-do steps, you can make your home safer and more protected from the bad guys.
